Why Don't Great Danes Seem to Realize Just How Big They Are?

I have nothing against Great Danes. Every single Dane I have ever met has been a sweet loving dog, but that is part of the problem as every time I sit in the chair or sofa when a Dane is in the room their first impulse is to sit on my lap and lick my face. Why don’t these dogs realize they are not
lap dogs?

(it cut off my question)

Who says they don't? As an owner of 2 female Great Danes I can tell you they know their size. They do not sit on peoples laps because we trained them not to. They like their height. When people sit down they are right a kissing level. We do keep them from getting too cozy with the visitors. They are just like every other dog except they don't have to jump up on you to reach your face. It has a lot to do with owner training.

Because anyone with half a brain would never permit a Great Dane to realize that it's bigger and stronger than they are.

Plus there does seem to be an inverse relationship between a dog's size and their desire to sit in laps. In other words the bigger the dog the more it wants to be a lap dog.

    Why should they?
It is the owner's job to train the dog.
With big dogs especially, the dog must be taught not to jump or sit on people.

That's part of the charm. They are gentle giants that don't use their size to intimidate.

I think this could be said of a lot of friendly large breed dogs!! LOL! I have boxers and I can tell you my female really does think she is either a puppy still or as small as her fur brothers (poms) because she tries her best to get into my lap and curl up still!! She weights approx. 55lbs right now (pregnant)!!!! It's really funny!! The best thing to do if it bothers you is push them away gently and say NO! Not mean but firm!! They are probably all used to doing that with their owners and being friendly think it's o.k. to do that to you!! HEHE, carry a towel for the druel!!

All dogs live by their energy. They have no concept of what breed they are or what they look like and their size and colour is immaterial to them. It's all down to traits and personality and the energy they project and receive.

Dogs don't really have any idea what size they are.

Ever see a tiny dog stand up to a huge one? The little one doesn't KNOW it's small!

I have 3 dogs and the smallest will take on the 2 bigger ones at the same time without a second thought!

My big one could crush the 2 smaller ones but he has no idea how big he is. It's the same with Danes. They don't know how big they are!

Just because they're big doesn't mean they don't want to kick back with their owners and relax. My boerboel is huge, but that's never stopped him from wanting to be cuddled.
