How much walking do you give a Great Dane a Day?

Sounds like a stupid question I know. I dont have Great Dane, I always thought being big athletic dogs that they would need about 1 nd a half to 2 hours. But my friend said to me the other day that they can only have about half an hour because otherwise their hearts would pack in. Im really curious!! If this is true could you please explain why? Thanks.

Your friend is very misinformed in regards to the Great Dane. Exercise of more then 1/2 hour will in no way harm their heart. Danes were bred to hunt boar, Danes are a working breed, Danes do carting, weight pulling, obedience, agility, rally, tracking and many other athletic venues. They go hiking, camping, running…
They aren't a breed that is in need of a lot of exercise but it cetainly will not harm them if they do get a lot of exercise.
I've owned my own Danes for over 25 years ( and my Dad always had Danes) I show in conformation, rally, obedience and am training for tracking. My Danes hike and camp and do jumps, etc.

It's a common misconception that big dogs are athletic. A lot of big dogs really aren't! Is your dog destructive in any way? Or acting bored? He may not need as much walking as you think. I'm part of a wonderful website for big dogs. The link is below. They would have a great answer for you.

Let's distinguish between a walk and a run. It's good for a dog to go for a long walk everyday.

Leash walking is not real exercise for any dog bigger than a 2lb Chihuahua. My 7lb MinPins walked 7 miles one night and still were hopping all over the car. You can walk a dog just about as long as your legs hold out unless it is hot then it is risky. Off leash exercise is best for dogs and that will tire them out. Great Danes were bred to hunt and ran long distances so were an athletic breed to start with. But an older, fat, or unhealthy dog can be injured if run too much. There are a few Danes that come to the dog park and they run for over an hour and go home happy. They are very healthy since they are in such good shape and fed the right food in the right amounts.
