I have a friend who rescued a great dane bullmastiff mix dog a couple of weeks ago. The owners were going to put him down b/c he killed a rabbit. Anyway, I was wondering if any of you have been around a great dane bullmastiff mix. I have owned a Great dane and a Doby Dane. My grandma used to have a bullmastiff. Both the Great Dane and Bullmastiff are not know to be bad tempered, but I've just never seen a mix.
She is a very large dog. I think we are going to take him tomorrow though. I'm excited!!!
Yes I have seen it and it is a beautiful mix. They can have a high prey drive which is probably why the rabbit got caught and killed. That doesn't necessarily mean that the dog is aggressive or bad natured, but rather acting on it's instincts. I would suggest you have your friend socialize this dog a lot as well as enroll in an obedience course taught by a dog behaviorist - not these classes you see at the local pet store. As a former dog trainer with experience and training in dog behavior, I shudder at the methods some of these "trainers" are using. It is extremely important to be a pack leader, especially when you are dealing with a dog of that size. Good luck to your friend, I'm sure it's a beautiful dog with expressive eyes, short hair, a medium broad muzzle and a somewhat slender yet muscular body - watch out for the tail - it's going to be like a whip!
