Caring for a puppy is always
troublesome and rewarding at the same time. This stands true for the Great Dane
puppies as well – only it should be multiplied by at least 10 times if you want
to describe the experience accurately. You will not even know the meaning of trouble
until you have a Great Dane puppy around you. You will find that you can love
and hate this puppy at the same time, or alternatively every minute – because
this dog will have you on your toes all the time.
One Great Dane Puppy
= 10 Children
Just one Great Dane puppy can be equal with a battery of
children. It can be as sweet, as loving, as affectionate and as rambunctious as
a child and at the same as destructive (in play) as ten children in one place.
You will need to just turn your back on something to find it is gone for ‘inspection’
in the mouth of your giant puppy.
What will always amaze you is that they
grow so huge so fast. Do not go for a Great Dane puppy unless you have seen one
close quarter and you are clear about of how big it is. No photograph will prepare
you for the size that this dog is in real life. It is as huge as huge can mean.
The first thing you will need to do as soon as you have a Great Dane puppy
in your home besides ensuring that it is vaccinated according to the schedule,
is to get it trained. You do not have even one day to loose here because these
dogs grow extremely fast and you will find it impossible to control it once it
reached its full size - at about eight months of age.
Obedience training
is a must for the Great Dane as well as potty and chewing training are among the
first things that this puppy should learn pronto. They love to chew, they love
to jump and hog the limelight they love to rub against people and startle them
by jumping on them (all playfully and well intentioned) that is hard to manage
even when it is a puppy; when it is fully grown this could result in a chain of
disasters that would drive to the walls.
Remember, the Great Dane stays
mentally a puppy for three very long years, while it grows to its full adult size
by the time it is eight months old. The combination would give a good idea of
what you could be in, if the puppy is not trained well. It would be a good idea
if the dog would be neutered/ spayed at an early stage, as it would diminish his
excitement to a large extent during the mating season.
