  • Breeding Your Great Dane

It may be possible at one time or other that you are inclined to consider taking up Great Dane breeding for business, or simply for the pleasure it gives you. However, before you even contemplate such a task, ensure you know all the pros and cons about Great Dane breeding. Only after understanding the process fully, should you consider going for breeding these dogs. There are already millions of homeless purebred dogs languishing in animal rescue shelters be sure you have a good reason for doing so.

Great Dane Breeding More Trouble Than Pleasure

There are not many plus points in Great Dane breeding. It is rather very painful to breed these dogs because they are generally delicate in health, particularly lacking bone strength and pregnancy adds further pressure to this health problem. If the bitch is not perfectly healthy, the puppies be weak and suffer from a number of health problems.

It is very common that the bitch will need a c-section, which is very expensive and dangerous for both the puppies and the mother. Besides there are other expenses such as ultrasound, regular check-ups, emergency care, etc. which will add to the final bill.

What if the bitch dies for complications during the birth process? Are you prepared to tale a risk in loosing you pet? Are you prepared to spend long hours feeding the puppies and caring for them enough to save their lives? Even if the bitch does not die, she could develop mastitis (which is pretty common with Great Danes) or refuse to nurse and you will still have to feed the puppies yourself which is both time taking and incredibly expensive.

In the event that the mother is unable to take care of her puppies for any reason whatsoever, feeding will actually be one of the least of your worries. You will need to clean the poop of the puppies round the clock and even have to help them relieve themselves, keep them warm and keep them company round the clock.

Your worries may not end even after you sold your puppies. People may change their minds about keeping the puppies and return the fully-grown up Great Dane to you. The dog at that time may be sick, ailing and in need to medical attention which will take a lot of effort and time, not to mention money.

As you can see, the Great Dane breeding is not a very pleasurable business. These animals are huge, with delicate health and need a lot attention even in normal circumstances. It is difficult to sell the puppies because you will need to be assured that the person to whom they are going can keep them and take care of them.

Great Dane breeding is a lifetime commitment are you willing to take on this role? Would you rather be happy discovering better way on how to care of your Great Dane at home?
