Everybody loves to have a new puppy; training and educating it is another
matter however. If you are considering training collars for dogs, it is
beneficial to have some information on the different types in order to make an
appropriate decision for your dog and for you. There are several manufacturers
of training collars for dogs, and each manufacturer usually offers several
models, each one with specific qualities.
With so many options to choose from, the average dog owner can find himself or
herself overwhelmed, but if the specific needs of each dog owner are clearly
identified, then the selection becomes much easier.
Different Sorts of training collars for dogs
Choosing the right type of collar can be key in the success of the training.
While it's true that every collar was made with the intention of training, each
one differs in its approach. Electronic collars are the first option to come to
mind. The electronic collar gives the dog a small, harmless, jolt of static
electricity whenever the dog misbehaves.
In addition to electronic collars, dog owners can also get choke collars. These
collars will constrict the dog's neck when force is applied, either by the owner
or by the dog's resistance. It is important to get proper instruction on how to
use this type of collar to prevent injury to your dog. Finally, in the “natural”
category of training collars for dogs there are citronella collars which release
a spray of sharply scented citronella whenever the dog exhibits inappropriate
behaviour.
Regardless of which training collar you select to use, it's paramount that your
dog understands that training is taking place and that the instructions on what
the pet is or isn't supposed to be doing are clear. Without clear instructions
on what the animal has to do in order to avoid punishment, training will only
result in fear or agressiveness. In the end, the training collar will slowly
become obsolete as the dog assimilates the new behavior and incorportates it as
normal part of its life.
Today, training collars for dogs are one of the most useful tools for dog owners. There are different classes of collars, but the most common are electronic, choking, and spray based. However, training collars for dogs should always be used in training and only under supervision and with clear instructions.
